First Lady Nikki Walker Lyons

First Lady Nikki Walker Lyons is a native of Raleigh, NC and is a cum laude graduate of Saint Augustine’s College (now University), Raleigh, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. She is also a May 2016 graduate of Fayetteville Technical Community College, earning a Diploma in Funeral Service Education – North Carolina Funeral Director Program. She has completed the Funeral Director Apprenticeship.   

 Lady Lyons is a lifelong member of the AME Church, having been nurtured in her home church, St. Paul AME Church in Raleigh. At St Paul, she faithfully and actively worked and served the church in numerous capacities including being appointed to the Board of Stewards and Vacation Bible School Teacher. She joined the Addie G. Stroud Women’s Missionary Society in 1996 and worked in the elected positions of Second Vice-President, Treasurer and PME Director.

 In 2004, her husband began his pastoral ministry at Allen Chapel AME Church, Laurinburg, NC. She worked in the Pankey-McLaurin WMS and served a one-year term as WMS Local President from 2008 – 2009. In 2009, her husband was appointed the Pastor of St. James AME Church in Winston-Salem and there she worked in the Sarah Allen WMS.  At St. James, she led the church in establishing the St. James Boutique, a free clothing closet for men, women and children in need. She created celebration Sundays that highlight and celebrate Cancer Survivors. She led the church in partnering with the Summer Food Service Program and with Forsyth County Public Schools by being on open feeding site for children in the summer. She is currently a member of the Cates-Hester WMS at Mount Zion AME Church in Hillsborough.

 Mrs. Lyons served as the Area Chairperson of the Martha McCauley Area Women’s Missionary Society from 2006 - 2012. She previously served the Martha McCauley Area as First Vice-President and Chairperson of Membership and Recruitment. She was elected a Delegate to the 17th WMS Quadrennial Convention held in 2011 in Orlando, FL.

 Since May 21, 2013, Mrs. Lyons has served as the President of the Western North Carolina Conference Branch Women’s Missionary Society (WNCC WMS).  Under her leadership, the WNCC WMS has experienced spiritual growth and increased mission outreach; outreach mission projects have expanded to serve the vulnerable, the poor and those in need. The outreach mission projects include support given to the AME Men’s Empowerment Center located in Raleigh.  Under her leadership, many Local Societies established food pantries, supported domestic violence prevention and abuse organizations, provided Summer Food Service Feeding sites, initiated adopt a school projects, given support to children in Foster Care and partnered with Alamance County Habitat for Humanity. The WNCC WMS has been recognized throughout the Second Episcopal District for most funds raised for the Dollars for Missions project and for the Dorcas Extravaganza.  Additionally, under her leadership a new electronic registration process has been implemented.

 Accepting God’s call to preach the Gospel, Lady Lyons preached her Initial Sermon on December 3, 2017. She received her License to preach from the African Methodist Episcopal Church on February 9, 2018.

 For 18 years, Mrs. Lyons has been a Wake County government employee. She is a Human Services Program Consultant and is responsible for community engagement, partnership development, resource management and relationship building with the faith community. She also manages the Human Services Faith Community Partnership, which is a collaboration of faith organizations that partner with Wake County Human Services to provide community support to children and families in need.  

She is a member of the Raleigh Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Raleigh Alumnae Delta Endowment Board. She is a member of the Community Advisory Board for Nurse Family Partnership which is a national maternal and childhood health program that helps first time mothers succeed. She is a member of the Board of Directors of SAFEchild, the only child abuse prevention agency in Wake County that works directly with families, providing programs and support to prevent child abuse and neglect.     

 Mrs. Lyons is married to the Rev. Dr. Steven L. Lyons, who was appointed Pastor of Mount Zion AME Church, Hillsborough, NC in May 2018. They are the proud parents of one adult son, Joshua.  She and her husband are entrepreneurs and in following her husband’s dream, opened the Steven L. Lyons Funeral Home in Raleigh in 2012.

 Mrs. Lyons serves the Lord with gladness and embraces Romans 8:28: “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”
